Caves of the Shumen Plateau
The karst relief of the Plateau
predestined its specific particularities, and is presented by the
surface forms (eddies, hollows, karst valleys) and underground forms,
with 60 registered caves, among them being the water caves “Zandana”
(located in the "Kioshkovete Park", 404 m above sea level facing
northeast) with a length of some 2706 m and “Taynite Ponori” (The Secret Pothole
or Heaven Masochist - located to the southwest of the Shoumen fortress, near the tourist
shelter "Detelina") with a length of some
1916 m and a depth of 115m. On the plateau itself there are no permanent
surface waters but at its foot there are many karst springs.
Another much visited cave is the 56 m rock shelter cave, Russalka or
Sulumara (Солу маара).

More
caves are being found.
Many of the
caves served as dwellings for the people in the stone-copper epoch.
Remnants of some Thracian villages have been discovered dating back to
the 4th to 2nd centuries B.C.
On
the slopes of the plateau cliff monasteries, churches and monk cells
have been preserved.
The
Golyamata Peshtera Cave, described by many on the internet as being on
the slopes of the Shumen Plato, is actually another name for the Large
Cave located under the giant Big Overhanging Cave near to the Madara Horseman, on
the slopes of the Provadia Plateau. There is also a Small Cave nearby.
