Watching over the ruins of the Little Roman Baths, Varna's ivy-covered History Museum is itself an intriguing part of the city's history. It is the oldest wholly preserved house in Varna. Its exhibition includes contemporary weapons and copies of British newspapers (1851), covering the event of its use by the Belgian Consulate, and its infamous use as a Turkish prison, and, under the communists, a Museum of the Revolution, before taking on its present role.

The actual building used by the museum of Varna’s history was built in 1851 for a Belgian consulate. Later it was turned into a hotel. From the end of the 19th century to 1929 it was used for the prison.     My excellent guide for the day was Kazandzhieva Aneliya.

The History of Varna Museum was established in 1969. Its new exhibition was inaugurated on November 22, 1991, situated in three rooms it reveals the city development as a port, as well as a cultural, commercial, industrial and medical centre during the period 1878-1939.

On the first floor are displayed the main crafts typical for the region: cotton growing, metalwork, but also the construction of a new port, the development of the navigation and the shipbuilding, the first loom from 1902, а printing press from the end of the 19th Century, with documents and models of the first boats and ships. А slithery, dressmaking and tailoring shop, shoemaker’s atelier, farm implements and machines are restored, with printing, weaving and brewing..

On the second floor is shown the transformation of Varna into an international resort and a summer capital of the Bulgarian culture. The cards, the beach articles, the old swimming suits are very interesting. There are exhibited original photos of ancient buildings, plans and maps of Varna , musical instruments, etc.

On the third floor one can be absorbed in the specific atmosphere of the city house and the life after the Liberation. There are presented also, a hotel room from the Hotel London (now the Grand Hotel Musala Palace). An eating-house Uncle Mityu's Café, a pastry shop, a hat shop, a toy shop and a lawyer’s and insurance offices, a photographer’s atelier, and the first bookshop in Varna. You can have your photo taken sitting behind the major’s desk.

The Varna History Museum overlooks the Small Roman Baths.
