Fanagoria

Proto-Bulgarian Village Complex

Asparuhovo Residential Area,  Asparuhovo Park

A show featuring horses, cascades and fire takes place every summer night in the Fanagoria Ethnographic Complex, over the bridge in the Asparuhovo Residential Area.

If you don't know anything about Bulgaria's founding fathers, then film director Svetoslav Ovcharov will relate stories of the founding of the state with a  multimedia performance starring proto-Bulgarians, Thracians, Slavs and Byzantines.

In September 2001 construction started of a new for attraction for Varna - an ancient Bulgarian village - a camp that existed during VI-VIII centuries. The realization of the project was to be done in two parts. According to the plan several tents were built at the first stage, which presented the life of the proto-Bulgarians up to VII century. Among them is the tent of the Khan, the tent of the high priest, tents of the crafts and others

During the second term an ancient Bulgarian fortress would be built with a mobile bridge, an early Christian temple and a museum presenting that old time. The village is built from wooden material gathered after the forest of the region had burnt down in a natural disaster.  At its final stage the village will be located over about 4 hectares.

A symbolic incident occurred some days before the opening of the village - during a horse riding rehearsal at the moment when two of the riders passed one another the pike of one of them met and killed the horse of the other rider.

Whether it was a tragic event or did "Tangra", the ancient god, take a big sacrifice?

The historic ethnographic complex of the proto – Bulgarian village of “Fanagoria” is a unique active museum in the open air in the country park of Fanagoria.
