Euxinograd Palace

Bulgarian Royal Summer Palace

(The Hospitable Sea Fortress)

Euxinograd (Bulgarian: Евксиноград, or Evksinograd or Euxinograde) is a former late 19th-century Bulgarian Royal Summer Palace complex and park on the Black Sea Coast, 8km north of central Varna. It is currently a governmental and presidential retreat hosting cabinet meetings in the summer, weddings and functions, and offering access for tourists to several villas and hotels. Since 2007, it is also the venue of the Operosa annual opera festival.

The idea for the construction of a luxury housing estate at this place is the combination of the peace of its impressive natural resources of the Black Sea coast with the nearness of world famous summer resorts Sts. Constantine & Elena (within 1 km) and Golden Sands (within 8 km). This good infrastructure allows quick and comfortable moving to the centre of Varna (within 8 km), to the international airport and to the seaport. The use of the latest materials and technologies in construction combined with wonderful architecture and excellent execution guarantee maximum comfort and family cosiness.

The residential complex Euxinograd offers 104 panoramic apartments, surrounded by Natural Park with unique vegetation, full-time security and underground parking.

The park is 80 hectares, and the construction began in 1890. It is home to over 200 different plant species from Asia, South America and the Mediterranean, said to be picked out by Ferdinand (ex-king) himself. A deodar (a cedar from the Himalayas) as old as one hundred years is planted in a special fertile soil taken from the mouth of the Kamchia River. Next to it grow tall palm trees. Two exquisite bridges - one made of metal, the other - made of cement imitating the trunk of a felled tree, give the finishing touch to the park architecture. The park is a combination of English and French styles and was finished by Eduard Andre.
The vineyards - the wine produced in the palace nowadays is thought of us one of the best in Bulgaria. The Euxinograd cellar also shelters very valuable 125-year-old French wines, preserved since the Liberation of Bulgaria.

This place for royal residence was personally chosen by Prince Alexander Battenberg in 1882. The prince preferred this heavenly spot of Bulgaria to any other places on the Black Sea coast because of its unique atmosphere, peace and seclusion. The palace building is in Renaissance style built in a park of varied and rare flora.

The interior Viennese architect Viktor Rumpelmayer designed the palace, which was named Sandrovo in 1885 after the Italian diminutive of Alexander's name — Sandro. Later the Knyaz extended the estate to its contemporary area of 80 hectares. However, no palace was built at that time.

The palace was built by Tsar Ferdinand. The pediment and other materials of the right wing of château Saint-Cloud in France, one of the private residences of the House of Orleans, was brought to Bulgaria by king Ferdinand and integrated in Euxinograd palace. He invited the Swiss architect Hermann Mayer and Bulgarian architect Nikola Lazarov. The palace was renamed Euxinograd in 1893 on the insistence of Princess Marie Louise, Ferdinand's first wife. The name comes from the Ancient Greek term for the Black Sea, (Euxeinos Pontos, "hospitable sea") and the South Slavic suffix – grad, meaning "town" or, historically, "fortress".

After the abolishment of the monarchy in Bulgaria through an illegal referendum held in the presence of the Soviet army in 1946, Euxinograd became a summer residence of the then-Communist authorities. The democratic changes in 1989 made the former royal palace a presidential and governmental residence and opened it for the public.
