Varna (BAPHA) is among Europe's oldest cities.
Miletians founded the trading colony of Odessos in 570 BC at the site of
an earlier Thracian settlement. In 339 BC, the city was unsuccessfully
besieged by Philip II but surrendered to Alexander the Great in 335 BC.
The Roman city, Odessos occupied 47 hectares in present-day central
Varna and had prominent public baths, erected in the late 2nd century,
now the largest Roman remains in Bulgaria and fourth largest known Roman
baths in Europe

Varna - the best
place to live in Bulgaria 2008
The town of Varna, located on the Northern Black
Sea coast and often referred to as the summer capital of Bulgaria, is the best
town to live in, according to a survey. The poll was conducted for the second
year in a row by two Sofia-based media, who invited Bulgarians to post their
opinion on the Internet over a period of two months.
How do Bulgarians evaluate their urban
environment and are they pleased with their way of life? It is impossible to
give a unanimous answer to the question. The survey results however outline
the Bulgarians' attitudes towards their cities. Forty of the country’s biggest
towns were selected and subjected to assessment based on forty-four specially
designed criteria. They include the presence of harmoniously blending
architecture, green areas, sports facilities, Internet access in public,
parking lots, crime rate, etc. The respondents were able to give their opinion
on a number of unconventional issues such as the greatest number of sunshine
days, beautiful ladies, cafeterias where one can have a nice cup of coffee,
and the sense of humour of the residents.
“The most important thing is that the evaluation
came from the town residents. The local administration operates half of the
funding under the Regional Development operational programme of the European
Union. One of the priorities under the project is urban restoration. The term
covers the improvement of the public infrastructure in these places. More than
400 million euro has been allocated to that effect. In fact, Bulgaria’s
largest cities are the best places for investments under the mentioned
operational programme,” Assen Gagauzov, Minister for Regional Development and
Public Works, said.
Varna came out as a winner in the survey for the second
year in a row. It is a place favourite not only with Bulgarians, but also with
hundreds of thousands of foreigners, who flock to its golden beaches, shady
alleys and fancy hotels. Thanks to the development of tourism, unemployment
rate has dipped to 2.25%, one of the lowest in the country. With the exception
of the summer season, when the city becomes a melting pot for various cultures
and nationalities, during the rest of the year Varna is a quiet place, the
local restaurants serve good food, and people’s lives are serene.

SNOW TRAFFIC
The latest project under way for this area
is for Varna to have a ski run with
a thick covering of artificial white snow. The ambitious project will include an
all-year-round winter
sports centre with a professional ice rink. Varna's Mayor Yordanov pointed out
that his goal is for the city to have a hockey team and winter
sportsmen good enough to compete with those of much colder Sofia.
