A vast necropolis dated to the late fifth - early fourth millennium BC, was discovered in 1972 near to Varna, on the northern Black Sea coast.

The archaeological excavations revealed numerous graves containing extremely rich finds and featuring more than 3000 objects of pure gold: sceptres and small axes, massive bracelets and articles of adornment, and gold plaques cut in the shape of a bull. Even the beautiful ceramic vessels found were incrusted with gold decoration. The burial of a priest with a gold sceptre and other royal power insignia, also made of gold, is remarkable and shows the importance of the area.

Bulgaria has some of the World's most ancient Gold Artefacts
Some of which can be seen  at the Archaeological Museum

On 12 December 1901 a group of public men and teachers established the Varna Archaeological Society which from then was the basic motive power for the interest and the study of the past of Varna, the Varna region and Northeast Bulgaria. On June 11, 1906 the exhibition of the museum was officially inaugurated in a room of the Girl’s High School (now the Archaeological Museum). In 1952 a school building was specially granted and the exhibition was moved into it.
From March 3, 1983 the Museum is situated in the present building, which is the only one offering complete possibilities for exhibiting and preserving its riches. During the whole period of its existence which is more than 120 years the Varna Archaeological Museum has constantly carried out archaeological investigations and excavations on various sites all over Northeast Bulgaria thus enriching its funds. The Varna Archaeological Museum keeps more than 100,000 objects-monuments of past epochs from Varna, the Region and Northeast Bulgaria.
In the Archaeological museum is exhibited the oldest golden treasure in the world.
