The town-museum of Nesebar is situated on a small peninsula some 850m long and 300m wide, connected to the mainland and New Nesebar by a narrow isthmus.
The millennium history of the town begins with the Thracian settlers who named their town "Menabria" (bria = town).
The Greek colonists renamed the town "Mesembria" and transformed the village into an important seaport and cultural centre with the privilege of coining money.
Each subsequent civilization - Roman, Byzantine, Slavs and Proto Bulgarians contributed to the unique history of the town.
Nesebar reached its peak during the Middle Ages when it belonged to the imperial Byzantium Family and more than 40 churches were built on this tiny area.
The old town of Nesebar is under UNESCO protection since 1983 as part of the world cultural heritage.
