for use as a quiet weekend retreat in the Yorkshire Dales
Where is The Peace Haven located?
The Peace Haven is on this spectacular moor in the
Yorkshire Dales
How do I get there? By your own transport to the
Peace Haven where
there is room to securely park several vehicles on your own land at the site.
One can drive right up to it on a tarmac road, and yes,
your cars will be safe, watched over by the inbuilt CCTV security
cameras.
Or ..
there is Public Transport available in the
form of a train to Britain's highest Main Line Railway Station at Dent on the scenic
Settle/Carlisle Railway. The Peace Haven is less than a 5 minute walk
from the Station.
Is there a telephone?
Peace Haven is hidden so deep within the
Yorkshire Dales that even mobile phones do not
work here.
However, BT graciously fitted us with a normal landline telephone, so
the simple answer is ... yes, there is.
Sleeping Arrangements.
There are four cosy bunks with metre wide
mattresses and 13 tog duvets and the log fire keeps everything warm and
aired.
Cooking
Facilities.
There is a solid fuel pot bellied stove for
heating and cooking which provides constant hot water and is ideal for
making toast.
Electricity and Water.
Peace Haven does not have 240v mains electricity or mains
water. Electricity comes from solar
charged 12 volt batteries, with a back up petrol generator. This
provides power for the
fluorescent lighting, TV, fans, vacuum cleaner, radios and CCTV.
Water is of the bottled mineral variety in 5 litre containers..
The Toilet is chemical with
lemon scented plastic bags.
An ideal base for outdoor
pursuits in the National Park
Being miles away from any city lights gives crystal clear
light-pollution free skies for star gazing and UFO watching, with
our telescope, weather
permitting, after all, we are up a mountain.
When the skip is running, radio buffs
can use our radio antenna to DX around the world. In the photo our guest
G4GJM (Mike) talks on a noise free channel to the United States and
enthuses about the complete absence of electrical interference.
Or you can just sit back and relax in the sunshine, and
don't forget the binoculars, the view is spectacular in every direction.
Oh, by the way,
did we mention this Peace Haven is under the ground in an ex-MOD ROC Monitoring Bunker?
Entry to the bunker is via a vertical metal
ladder.
This Peace Haven is probably not suitable for the
aged, or the infirm, or the claustrophobic, but kids just love it as
it's the ultimate adventure.
