Well, Johnnie tells me he had this quiet weekend planned for Connie and himself up in Ingleton when word got around and all of a sudden it was to be a party on Saturday night, where anyone who could would turn up. Excluding John K and myself who were out of the country on 29-09-07. However, on the Friday Connie took poorly and Johnnie whisked her off back home to the doctors in Bournemouth. She is OK. More later. Much frantic phoning ensued by Big Jack to cancel the party but I understand stragglers Frank Squirrel, Mike and Mary Myers, Jimmy Boursey and Brian Lewis ended up having a bit of a get together. -------------------------------- E-mail from Alan Edmonds requesting info CAN ANYONE HELP ??? alansinfo@sky.com

==================== - Meanwhile back at the ranch an email from Richie Hi Ged, unfortunately couldn't make the last reunion and not sure about the next one either, retirement does put a dent in ones finances and limits the things that one would like to do. Hope you and yours are keeping ok, myself recovering from a shoulder replacement which is improving day by day and faster than I was expecting although it will be many moons before it regains it normal strength if ever. However can't complain if it isn't painful. Hopefully by next spring it should not prevent me from carrying on my normal functions riding my motorcycle. I visit the Black Rose site from time to time and every time it brings back happy memories from times long ago. Thought I would include a pic of me by my motorcycle, this was taken North of Toronto in September. You will notice that my facial hair is removed I thought I would start my retirement of with a clean slate so to speak :) This was my first full year of retirement so the bike sure got a work out. Next year I start my OA Pension 65...Jees its hard to believe. Anyway talk later, Richie Richie 2004 click to enlarge the photo

Black Rose Pothole Club 2nd Reunion of 2003 29th March - Marton Arms - Ingleton A good time was had by one and all thanks to Big Jack for the arrangements.
Yorkshire Post - Published Date: 08 February 2003 These days youngsters are often heard complaining they've "nothing to do". Why not, I'll never know. It's the easy option for idleness. Those who are bored today could take a leaf out of the book of folk like John Winterburn, who lives in East Leeds. As a teenager John became interested in the great outdoors through Billy, the brother of his chum John Kirbitcon. The two Johns hitched lifts from Otley up to Ingleton in the Dales to follow a hobby they'd become fascinated with – potholing. "We used to go by bus from Leeds to Otley and then 'thumb it' to Ingleton," recalls John, "I progressed to getting a motor bike and then we used to ride there." John met others like-minded people at Scar End Farm, Ingleton, and they went on to form the Black Rose Pothole Club. That was in 1957. There were plumbers, electricians, engineers, mill workers – ordinary working class chaps, which was a bit unusual in those days for potholing was a preserve, although not exclusively, of "university types", John remembers. President of the Black Rose Pothole Club was Jack Procter, one of the founder-members, and he was head honcho until he went to work in South Africa in 1962. The club continued but by the late 1960s other interests had taken over for many members. Jack has returned to Blighty and now lives in Preston. A chance meeting with a friend threw up the idea of a reunion dinner. That set Jack on the hunt. He quickly discovered about 28 of the 40-plus members scattered across England and Scotland. He found Bob Laycock who now lives in New Zealand and a guy called Richie in Canada who was a member. There was such interest in the idea of a reunion dinner that Jack's organised one at the Marton Arms at Thornton-in-Lonsdale on March 29 at 7pm. Bob and Richie are travelling from the colonies, and they'll be joined by another 42 at the last count. But two faces Jack and John recall are missing. They're keen to be in touch with Kim Alderton and Bob "Stringbean" (neither can remember his surname) - both from Leeds. "Tell them it's 'Big Jack' that should jog their memories!" says the big fella who stands 6ft 8in and who can be contacted by phone on 01772 496806. Sounds as though that's going to be a fantastic night at the Marton Arms. MORE PHOTOS NEEDED PLEASE These are courtesy of Big
Jack Proctor
Duncan, Pete D, Jan, Ged and Adam MORE PHOTOS NEEDED PLEASE The old Black Rose members Pete Cumpsty, Johnnie Seaton, Mike Myers and Ged Dodd were flaunting their new Black Rose Caving Club badges. Dacca Davies has an old lead badge off the fountain which means Tiger Culshaw can now replace the ones which were acquired in the old days - nobody missed them, did they? Special thanks to the lads who came in from overseas - nice to see you. And nice to see Jennifer Myers after all these years. --------------------------------------- The Black Rose Pothole Club Reunion of 2002 was enjoyed by the 11 old Black Rose Members who attended. |
